Wembley-The Build Begins
Published : 24/07/2008 16:42:13
On August 8th 2008 , Wembley will undergo a rebuild of the green car park into one of the biggest purpose built street circuits, ever to be constructed in the world.
Before the build, we had sent some of the team to the biggest street circuits in the world, which where based in America and Japan to gain experience on the construction and layout format of these tracks. This would help us hugely in building this bespoke track at Wembley.
Here are few facts to get your head around the figures.
275 tonnes of specially constructed race concrete barrier will be transported to Wembley Stadium Car Park and be used to construct what will form the track acting as a 'bowl' for the event.
A specialist contractor who has previous experience with the Race of Champions, (which was run inside the stadium) was enlisted for this job. All 275 tonnes of barrier will be brought in by 5 articulated trucks and will be bolted together to form the track.
This process should take 4 hours. The race barriers have been tested by numerous road safety schemes with up to 70-100 mph impacts. This resulted in no movement. An additional 1000 metres of fencing will form the perimeter of the venue.
To give you an idea of the scale of the track, the first corner diameter is 40 metres wide which is twice the diameter of most Grand prix circuits. With such a huge run up to corner one, drivers will be expected to launch the cars early at the top of 3rd gear, where they be expected to run wide and close to the barriers.
The course then runs in through a high speed transition to two hairpin turns which will be the prime overtaking spots for any cars that make a slow transition.
This transition then tightens down to 20 metres (still bigger then most race tracks!)
To make this build even more astonishing , the whole faciltiy then has to be cleared, and the whole infastructure then has to be removed, as the car park is then needed for the biggest football game of the year, 'The Charity Shield'.
Some of the Pro drivers that have tested it, have reviewed it as the ultimate layout; being fast, and wide with all the ingredients to show what Pro Level drifting is to the public.
See you all there on Saturday 9th August!
Also don’t forget to buy tickets online to avoid disappointment.
